What you should know before started
Below you will find a list of the farms, as you will see the main farms comes first, and beneath you will find the crofter places. Some of these places were not crofter places, rather houses without land. On Tangen are now (1932) 7 cotter places which last winter produced 7 cows and about 100 sheep. In 1865 there were over 30 cotters who had been raising 100 cows and 275 sheep. This count tells us about only the lower laying places and the bigger cattle. Since then we have not seen as many as in 1865. The emigration, which took place from the 1850 years on, had bad effects on both individuals and house holds. It wasn't only the land that gave livelihood on the places. Both workers and cotters. Yes even the farmers, carried on fishing way out in the fishing place.
Often the women went fishing and made money with cleaning and salting. But in spite of this nearby industry, the number of cotters went down. Tangagarden had no cotters when the century ended, and Prestgarden which had 4, now has only 1. Here were only the empty woods for hunting. In the same manner the shrinking was taking place on Lægreid farms, and now they have only there 7 cotters. It is America that has become home places for most of those who left, either the husman and his family went to America, or he died and his children went alone, their yearning was to build their own places.
Few bought for themselves here in the land. It is difficult to write about the worker's places and about who lived there. And this is because so many of them had the same name, such as Haugen, Strondi, Øyni, Hola, and Jerven. All the more this caused difficulties in the emigration in 1865, when some cotters had shifting landlords (moved from place to place?).There were so many of the cotters. And after introduction of the potato, that in 1865 they raised nearly 100 barrels of potato crop. They must be forced to grow them right up to the boundaries. The old renters confirmed this with the next neighbor mark for their many field strips. And likewise could "Kjøpert i Strondi" brag about having 7 cows and 11 houses on the place. And Vassplassane was bigger than this.
